Summary: The poet recounts her unexpected meeting with a wolf

One day, outside,

I turned and met a wolf.

Proud amber eyes

Gazed intently into mine.

Standing on long legs,

With tail relaxed,

He spoke to me as

No dog ever had.

There was no fear

In him or me,

And as he left, I saw

A collar on his neck;

It mattered not—

Untamed, unbowed,

That spirit-wolf was free.
