Cold Winter’s Day

The snow
fell
without mercy,
but so much grace
that I could not help but stare
out my window;
the sun shone deceptively bright
as the cold seared through my
bones
when I got my mail—
I wondered what it was like for the
forest animals;
were they warm in their hibernation,
just laying suspended in a dream
for Spring to come
lilting with all her flowers,
but I saw
a wild maine coon look at me as if I were Father Winter,
fear in his eyes as he ran;
and I wonder if he knew the cold that winter
sang straight through my bones
in his groaning breath.
